Stonemasons of York Minster
Client
The Open University
Location
York Minster
This film takes us inside the world of the stonemasons and stone carvers of York Minster, revealing the craftsmanship that has shaped this iconic building for centuries.
Part of a series exploring the arts and visual cultures of the pre-modern world - when artworks were deeply woven into daily life - it examines the vital role of the stonemason in medieval architecture and the continuation of this ancient tradition today.
From essential repairs to new creations, we step inside the workshop and up onto the scaffolding to witness these artisans at work. Still using many of the original stone carving techniques, both men and women play a crucial role in preserving the Minster for future generations.
